How plumbing companies rank in the Google Maps 3-pack for "plumber near me" and emergency searches: categories, services, hours, reviews, locations and ranking grids, with map results from plumbing companies we work with.

Short answer

To rank a plumbing company on Google Maps, set "Plumber" as your primary category, fill in every service and the towns you serve, keep hours that match when you truly answer (24/7 wins emergency searches), earn a steady flow of detailed Google reviews, add real photos every month, and link the profile to a page with your city and "plumber" in its title. Distance is a top factor, so you rank best near a real address; you reach more towns with more real locations, city pages and reviews from those towns. Check progress with a ranking grid, and judge it by calls.

Why does the Google Maps 3-pack matter so much for plumbers?

Because it is where "plumber near me" calls happen. When a homeowner's water heater floods the garage, they do not scroll through ten websites; they look at the map, the three businesses under it, the stars, and whether the business is open, and they tap call. The map pack (the "3-pack") sits right below the paid ads and Local Services Ads, and for most plumbing searches it is the first organic thing people see.

That makes Google Maps different from regular SEO in two ways that matter for plumbers:

  • Speed of decision. Plumbing is often urgent. The searcher chooses in seconds, from the profile alone, often without visiting a website. Your profile is your storefront.
  • Location. The same search returns different businesses a few miles apart. You can be #1 at your shop and invisible across town. That is why ranking grids, below, matter more than a single "rank."

Map rankings are also what Local Services Ads and AI assistants draw on: the same reviews, categories and hours feed all three. Get the profile right and every channel gets easier. For the website side of the same work, see plumbing SEO.

The spread is the honest part. Anderson and Hi-Desert own their grids; Service Lion, in a dense Orange County market, is at 22% top 3 and still climbing. Map results depend heavily on how many competitors sit near you and how long they have been building reviews.

How does Google rank plumbers on Google Maps?

Google's own help page names three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches what was searched), distance (how far you are from the searcher, or from the place named in the search) and prominence (how well known you are, shown by reviews, ratings, links and mentions). Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey breaks those into individual factors. Here is its 2026 map-pack top ten, with what each means for a plumber:

RankFactorBucketPlumber action
1Primary GBP categoryRelevance"Plumber"
2Proximity to the searcherDistanceRank outward from a real address; add real locations for new markets
3Keywords in the business titleRelevanceUse only your real name; never add keywords
4Physical address in the city searchedDistanceReal offices in the towns that matter
5Open at the time of searchRelevanceAccurate 24/7 or extended hours, if you answer
6High star ratingProminenceAsk every happy customer; fix the causes of bad reviews
7Address shown (not hidden)DistanceShow the address if customers can come there
8Additional categoriesRelevanceOnly for work you do
9Number of Google reviews with textProminenceSteady requests after every job
10Correct map pinDistancePin on your real building

Distance is the one you cannot fake and should not try to. Everything else, you can work on this week.

It also helps to know what is not in that top ten. Posting every day, keyword-stuffed descriptions and buying hundreds of directory listings rarely move a plumber's map rankings on their own. The factors that do move are the boring ones: the right category, accurate hours, complete services, a real address and a steady stream of reviews. In nearly every plumbing audit we run, the biggest gains come from fixing those basics before anything clever. When a competitor outranks you despite a weaker profile, the reason is usually distance: they are closer to the searcher. That is a location question, not an optimization one, and the sections on service areas and multiple locations below cover how to answer it honestly.

What is a Google Maps ranking grid and how do you read it?

A ranking grid is a map of your service area covered in dots. Each dot shows where your business ranks in Google Maps for one keyword, as if someone searched from that exact spot. Green dots (ranks 1–3) are where you are in the 3-pack; red dots are where you are not. Because map results change street by street, a grid is the only honest way to see how visible a plumbing company really is.

Grid numberWhat it meansExample
Average map rankYour average position across every dotHi-Desert: 1.30 for "plumbing repair"
% of grid top 3Share of dots where you are in the 3-packAnderson: 100% for "plumbers Bethany"
Competitor countHow many businesses compete for the keywordJoe Cole: #1 of 225 for "plumber"
Grid size and spacingHow far out the grid reachesMatch it to where you actually drive

How to use a grid well:

  • Track the keywords that book jobs: "plumber," "plumber near me," "emergency plumber," "water heater repair," "drain cleaning," plus "plumber [town]."
  • Run the same grid, same size, same keyword every month, so changes mean something.
  • Expect a bullseye: green near your address, fading outward. Growth shows as the green ring spreading.
  • Compare against the business ranking #1 in the red areas. That is your gap analysis (below).
  • Do not panic about one bad grid. Map results move day to day; look at the trend.

Which Google Maps keywords should a plumber track?

Track a short list that covers how people actually search for a plumber, split by intent. Five to ten keywords per location is enough; more just adds noise. This is the set we start most plumbing clients with:

KeywordWhy track itWhat usually moves it
plumberThe broadest, highest-volume map searchPrimary category, reviews, distance
plumber near meMobile, ready-to-call searchesSame as above, plus hours and proximity
emergency plumber / 24 hour plumberUrgent, high-value callsAccurate 24/7 hours, an answered phone, emergency page
plumber [town]How you rank in each market by nameCity pages, reviews mentioning the town, real locations
water heater repair / installationHigh-ticket workWater heater category and services, a strong service page
drain cleaningFrequent, repeat workDrainage service category, services list
leak detectionSpecialty work with less competitionCustom service, a dedicated page
commercial plumberLarger jobs and repeat accountsCommercial service page, commercial reviews

The pattern across our plumbing clients is that the broad keywords ("plumber," "plumber near me") are the hardest and the most valuable, while service keywords such as "leak detection" or "plumbing repair" often go green first. Hi-Desert Plumbing hit 100% top 3 for "leak detection" and an average rank of 1.30 for "plumbing repair"; Killeen Plumbing Company reached an average rank of 2 for "commercial plumber." Those early wins bring calls while the broad terms build, and they show Google more of what you do, which helps the broad terms too.

Keep the list stable. Changing keywords every month makes it impossible to see trends. Add new ones when you add a service or a location, and keep the old ones running.

Which Google Business Profile categories should a plumber use?

"Plumber" as the primary category, almost always. It is the most important map factor and it matches the broadest searches. Then add secondary categories only for work you genuinely do and want calls for:

CategoryUse it if you…
Plumber (primary)Are a plumbing company
Drainage serviceDo drain cleaning and drain repair as a core service
Water heater installation serviceInstall and replace water heaters regularly
Septic system servicePump, inspect or repair septic systems
Water softening equipment supplierSell and install water softeners
Gas installation serviceRun and repair gas lines
Bathroom remodelerDo full bathroom remodels, not just fixtures
HVAC contractor / Air conditioning contractorAlso do heating and cooling, like Anderson and NexAir

After categories, fill in services. Google offers predefined plumbing services; tick every one you do, then add custom services for your high-ticket work in the words customers use ("Tankless water heater installation," "Sewer line camera inspection," "Slab leak repair"). Whitespark's 2026 survey rates predefined services at #22 and keywords in custom service titles at #30 among map factors, both new to the list this year.

Write the business description for people: what you do, where, how fast, and what makes you different, in plain sentences. And keep the name exactly as it appears on your truck and invoices; Google's guidelines for business profiles forbid adding keywords or locations to it.

Do 24/7 hours help a plumber rank on Google Maps?

Yes, when they are true. "Business is open at time of search" ranked #5 for the map pack in Whitespark's 2026 survey. For plumbers this is a bigger deal than for most trades, because so many searches happen at night, on weekends and on holidays, when a pipe bursts or a sewer backs up. A plumber showing "Open 24 hours" can appear at 2 a.m. when competitors marked "Closed" drop out.

  • Only set 24/7 hours if a person, or an after-hours answering service that books jobs, really picks up.
  • Set holiday hours before every holiday so the profile never shows the wrong hours on the days pipes freeze or drains back up.
  • If you offer emergency service but not 24/7, say so in the description and on your emergency page.
  • Missed calls after hours waste the ranking. Track your after-hours answer rate.

This is also why answering every call is part of map strategy, not a separate topic.

Should a plumber show their address or be a service-area business?

Show it if customers can genuinely come to you (a showroom, an office with staff during posted hours). Hide it, and set a service area, if you only work at customers' homes and the address is your house. Whitespark's 2026 survey ranked "address is showing on GBP" #7, so a real, visible office tends to help. But Google's guidelines for business profiles are clear that you can only list an address where you actually operate; virtual offices, mailbox stores and empty desks get profiles suspended.

SetupBest forWatch out for
Storefront (address shown)Plumbers with a staffed office or showroomMust be staffed during posted hours
Service-area business (address hidden)Plumbers working from home or a yardRanks mostly around the hidden address; set realistic service areas
Hybrid (address shown + service areas)Office that also sends trucks outList towns you actually serve

Can a plumbing company have more than one Google Business Profile?

Yes, one for each real, separate location, and it is the most powerful way to rank in more towns. Because distance is a top-two factor, one profile cannot cover a big region alone. Our clients with the most Google calls grew by opening real locations in new markets, each with its own profile:

  • Anderson Plumbing grew from one Google Business Profile to about five; the owner estimates 700–800 new customers from Google.
  • Underwood Plumbing runs three, in McKinney, Bonham and Sherman, and got 897 calls across them in five months.
  • NexAir is in the top 3 in every market it serves, and grew from $1M to $4M.

Each location needs a real address you can prove at verification (Google often asks for video), its own phone number, staff or work tied to it, and its own page on your website. Do not create profiles for addresses you do not operate from; when Google catches it, it can suspend every profile linked to you. If a profile does get suspended, the suspended Google Business Profile guide walks through reinstatement.

How do plumbers rank on Google Maps in towns beyond their shop?

Slowly, and only partly through the map. If you do not have a real location in a town, the map pack will mostly favor plumbers who do. You can still win calls there in three ways:

  1. City pages on your website for each town, with real jobs and reviews from that town (see city pages). These rank in organic results and add relevance for the map.
  2. Reviews that mention the town. Customers in Allen writing "fixed our water heater in Allen" add local relevance.
  3. Local Services Ads, which let you target towns by service area rather than distance. See LSA for plumbers.

If a town consistently brings in work, that is the signal to open a real location there, like Underwood did with Bonham and Sherman.

How many reviews does a plumber need to rank on Google Maps?

More than you think, and steadily. Star rating (#6) and number of reviews with text (#9) are both top-ten map factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey, and reviews with photos were added as a new factor. There is no magic number: look at the three plumbers in the pack for your main keyword and aim to beat their recent pace, not just their total. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

DoDon't
Ask in person at the end of every jobBuy reviews or use review-swap groups

Do photos and posts help plumbers rank on Google Maps?

Photos, yes. Whitespark's 2026 survey added photo quality, relevance of photos to your categories, recency of photos and user-uploaded photos as new factors. For a plumber that means: real trucks, uniformed techs, before-and-after shots of water heaters and repipes, and the shop, uploaded every month. Stock photos do nothing.

Posts are lower value for ranking, but they are a cheap way to show you are active: a seasonal tip (frozen pipes in winter, water heater flushes in spring), a recent job, or a new service area. Remember that Google Maps Q&A was removed in December 2025, so answers that used to live there now belong on your website FAQ.

Yes, especially consistency. Your business name, address and phone (NAP) should be identical on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Angi, Nextdoor and the dealer locators of the brands you install. Whitespark's 2026 survey found three of the top five AI search visibility factors are citation factors, so accurate listings now help you get recommended by AI tools too. Links from local sites (sponsorships, the chamber, local news) support prominence. More on links in plumbing SEO.

How do I find out why another plumber outranks me on Google Maps?

Run a gap analysis against the plumber ranking #1 where you are not. Check these in order:

What does a fully built plumber Google Business Profile look like?

Most plumbing profiles we audit are half done: right name and phone, then gaps everywhere else. Here is the checklist we work through for every plumbing client, in order of impact:

FieldFully builtCommon gap
Business nameExactly as on trucks, invoices and signageKeywords or a city stuffed in
Primary categoryPlumberA narrower category such as "Water heater installation service"
Secondary categoriesOnly real services: drainage, water heaters, septic, gasNone, or categories for work you don't do
ServicesEvery predefined plumbing service you do, plus custom high-ticket onesEmpty or five generic items
Service areasThe towns you actually drive toA 100-mile radius, or nothing
HoursTrue hours, including 24/7 if staffed, and holiday hours"Open 24 hours" with voicemail at night
PhoneA local number that rings a personA number that forwards to an unanswered line
Website linkThe matching location page, with city and "plumber" in its titleThe home page for every location
DescriptionPlain sentences: what, where, how fast, why youKeyword lists or blank
PhotosTrucks, techs, jobs, shop; added monthlyLogo only, or stock images
ReviewsSteady new reviews, every one answeredBursts, then nothing; no replies
Booking / messagingTurned on only if someone responds quicklyMessages left unanswered for days

Work through it once, properly, and most plumbing profiles see more calls from the rankings they already have, before any ranking moves at all. That is often the fastest win in plumbing marketing.

What Google Maps mistakes cost plumbers the most calls?

The ones we see most often in audits, roughly in order of damage:

  1. The wrong primary category. A plumber listed as "Water heater installation service" can lose the broad "plumber" searches entirely.
  2. Keywords in the name. It may help briefly, then a competitor suggests an edit or Google suspends the profile, and every call stops.
  3. Fake or virtual addresses. The most common reason plumbing profiles get suspended. One bad profile can put the rest at risk.
  4. Hours that lie. "Open 24 hours" with no one answering burns emergency callers, who then leave reviews about it.
  5. Missed calls. A map ranking that rings an unanswered phone is a lead handed to the next plumber in the pack.
  6. Review bursts. Fifty reviews in a week after a year of nothing looks unnatural and does less than a steady pace.
  7. Linking every location to the home page. Each profile should point to its own location page.
  8. Changing the name, address or category often. Big edits can trigger re-verification and ranking swings.

How do Local Services Ads and the map pack work together for plumbers?

They sit one above the other and feed on many of the same signals. Local Services Ads (with the Google Verified badge) appear above the map for many plumbing searches, and you pay per lead rather than per click. The map pack below them is free. Whitespark's 2026 survey lists budget and bidding, reviews, service selection and response times as the top four factors for ranking in Local Services Ads, and three of those (reviews, services and responsiveness) also lift your map rankings.

Local Services AdsGoogle Maps 3-pack
CostPay per leadFree clicks; you invest in the work
ReachTowns you choose as service areasStrongest near a real address
SpeedCalls within days of approvalBuilds over weeks and months
BadgeGoogle VerifiedNone; stars and reviews do the work
Best forEmergency calls and towns where you have no locationSteady calls near your locations

Most plumbing companies we work with run both: LSA to cover emergencies and outlying towns now, the map pack to bring the cost of each booked job down over time. The hub covers Local Services Ads for plumbers in more depth.

How long does Google Maps SEO take for a plumber?

Fixes to a broken profile (wrong category, missing services, wrong hours) can show within weeks. Building grid coverage outward from your address usually takes a few months of reviews and pages. New locations need verification first, then time to build reviews. Anderson Plumbing's owner says the phones rang more within about three months; Bodhi's family business went from invisible on Google Maps in February 2026 to the top three by July. Your market, competition and starting point decide the pace.

How do ChatGPT and Google AI Mode choose which plumber to recommend?

They lean on the same data the map uses: your Google profile, your reviews, consistent listings across the web and clear answers on your website. Google's AI Mode has direct access to Business Profile data; other assistants rely more on listings, reviews and mentions elsewhere. Win the map, keep your details identical everywhere, earn detailed reviews and answer questions plainly on your site. No one can guarantee an AI recommendation, so track prompts for your market over time. More in getting named by AI search.

Google Maps for plumbers FAQ

How do I get my plumbing business on Google Maps?

Create or claim a Google Business Profile, choose "Plumber" as the primary category, add your service area or address, verify it (often by video), then fill in services, hours, photos and your website link.

How do plumbers rank higher on Google Maps?

Use "Plumber" as the primary category, complete every service, keep accurate hours, earn steady reviews, add real photos, link to a page with the city and "plumber" in its title, and build real locations in the markets you want.

What is the best Google Business Profile category for a plumber?

"Plumber" as primary. Add secondary categories such as "Drainage service" or "Water heater installation service" only for work you actually do.

Do 24-hour hours help a plumber rank?

Yes, if they are true. Being open at the time of search is a top-five map factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey, which matters for night and weekend emergencies.

Can a plumber rank on Google Maps without an address?

Yes, as a service-area business with the address hidden, but you will rank mostly near the hidden address. Real locations in other towns help you rank there.

Can I have multiple Google Business Profiles for my plumbing company?

Only one per real location you operate from. Anderson Plumbing grew from one profile to about five and Underwood runs three, each a real location.

Why did my plumbing business drop on Google Maps?

Common causes are a category or name change, a new competitor nearby, slowed reviews, wrong hours, or a suspension. Check a ranking grid and run a gap analysis against the business now ranking above you.

Is Google Maps Q&A still worth using?

No. Google removed Q&A from Maps in December 2025. Put those answers on your website instead.

How many reviews does a plumber need?

Enough to match the recent pace of the top three in your market. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

What is a Google Maps ranking grid?

A map of your service area covered in points showing where you rank for one keyword at each point. It shows average rank and the share of the area where you are in the top 3.
