Plumbing SEO

Plumbing SEO
that books calls.

SEO for plumbers, measured in booked jobs: the Google Business Profile, keyword map, service and city pages, reviews, links and technical fixes that put you in front of homeowners searching for a plumber, with results from plumbing companies we work with.

Short answer

Plumbing SEO is the work that gets a plumbing company found when people search for a plumber: in the Google map pack, the organic results under it, and AI answers. It comes down to five jobs: a fully built Google Business Profile with "Plumber" as the primary category, one page on your site for every service you want calls for, one page for every city you serve, a steady flow of detailed reviews, and a fast, clean site Google can read. Measure it in calls and booked jobs, not rankings alone. Our plumbing clients' results, below, show what that looks like in real markets.

What is plumbing SEO?

Plumbing SEO (search engine optimization) is everything you do so that a homeowner with a leaking water heater, a backed-up drain or a burst pipe finds your company on Google and calls you instead of the next plumber. It is not one tactic. It is a set of connected jobs across three places where plumbing searches get answered:

  • The Google map pack (the three businesses on a map at the top of local results). For "plumber near me" and "emergency plumber" searches, this is where most calls start. It runs on your Google Maps and Business Profile work.
  • Organic results (the regular blue links). These run on your website: service pages, city pages, titles, internal links and links from other sites.
  • AI answers (Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and others). These pull on the same signals, plus mentions of your business across the web.

Local SEO and plumbing SEO overlap almost completely, because almost every plumbing search is local. Nobody searches "water heater installation" hoping to hire a plumber in another state. So when this page says SEO, it means local SEO: getting found in your service area for the work you actually do.

What plumbing SEO is not: paid ads. Google Ads and Local Services Ads sit above the map pack and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build and keeps producing calls once it ranks. Most plumbing companies that grow fast run both, and the plumbing marketing hub covers how the channels fit together.

What results have plumbing companies seen from SEO?

These are Stryker Digital plumbing clients, by name, with numbers from their own Google Business Profile reporting, Search Console and map-ranking grids. A ranking grid checks where you appear on Google Maps from dozens of points across your service area; "top 3" means you show in the map pack at that point.

Two honest notes on these numbers. First, not every result is a jump: Anne the Plumber's Google calls in June 2026 were flat year over year, even while clicks and grid coverage grew. SEO compounds unevenly, and a flat month is normal. Second, the clients with the biggest call numbers (Underwood with three profiles, Anderson with about five, NexAir across several markets) won by covering more real locations and more services, not by one trick on one page.

How does Google rank plumbers?

Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the location in the search) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews, links and articles). Every tactic in plumbing SEO feeds one of those three.

For more detail, Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asks local search experts to rank individual factors. Its 2026 top factors are a useful checklist, because they split cleanly into the map pack and the organic results:

RankMap pack factor (2026)What it means for a plumber
1Primary GBP category"Plumber" as your primary category, not "Water heater installation service" or "Drainage service"
2Proximity to the searcherYou rank best near your address; reach farther towns with real locations, pages and reviews
3Keywords in the business titleOnly your real, legal or branded name counts; adding "Emergency Plumber Dallas" breaks Google's rules and risks suspension
4Physical address in the city of searchA real office in a town helps you rank there; a fake one gets profiles removed
5Open at the time of search24/7 hours (only if you truly answer) win the 2 a.m. burst-pipe searches
6High star ratingKeep a 4.5+ average by asking every happy customer
7Address shown on the profileStorefront profiles tend to outrank hidden-address ones, when you genuinely serve customers there
8Additional categoriesAdd "Drainage service", "Septic system service" and others only for work you do
9Number of Google reviews with textVolume and recency of real reviews
10Correct map pin placementPin on your actual building
RankOrganic factor (2026)What it means for a plumber
1A dedicated page for each serviceOne page each for water heaters, drain cleaning, sewer lines, repiping, leak detection
2City or neighborhood relevanceName the towns you serve, with real local detail
3Quality of links to your siteLinks from local and trade sites, not bought link packages
4Keywords in the title tag of the page your profile links to"Plumber in Bethany, OK | Company Name"
5Links from industry-relevant sitesSuppliers, manufacturers, trade associations
6Internal linkingService pages link to city pages and back

Read across both lists and the pattern for a plumbing company is clear: the profile decides the map pack, the pages decide organic, and reviews and real locations help both. The rest of this guide takes each piece in turn.

Why is the Google Business Profile the core of plumbing SEO?

Because most plumbing calls come from the map pack, and the map pack is ranked on your Google Business Profile. A plumbing company with a perfect website and a half-built profile will lose "plumber near me" to a competitor with a weaker site and a complete profile almost every time. When we start with a plumbing client, the profile is the first thing we fix.

  1. Primary category: "Plumber." It is the single most important map factor. Use secondary categories only for work you do.
  2. Services. Add Google's predefined plumbing services, then custom ones for your high-ticket work (tankless water heater installation, sewer line replacement, slab leak repair). Whitespark's 2026 survey ranks predefined services and keywords in custom service titles in the top 30 map factors.
  3. Service areas. List the towns you actually drive to.
  4. Hours. If you take emergency calls, set hours that say so, and answer them.
  5. Photos. Real trucks, crews and jobs, added every month. Not stock.
  6. Website link. Point it at the page that matches the profile's location, not just the home page, and put the city and "plumber" in that page's title.
  7. Reviews. Ask after every job and reply to every review.

Google Maps Q&A was removed in December 2025, so ignore any advice to seed questions on your profile; put those answers on your website instead. And if you run Local Services Ads, the badge is now "Google Verified" (the older Google Guarantee ended on December 7, 2025).

The full map-pack playbook, including ranking grids, multiple locations, service-area rules and suspensions, is in Google Maps SEO for plumbers. For the field-by-field profile setup, see the Google Business Profile guide; the steps are the same for plumbers, only the categories change.

Client proof

Underwood Plumbing runs three Google Business Profiles, one for each real market (McKinney, Bonham and Sherman, TX). From April to August 2026 those profiles produced 177, 172, 208, 183 and 157 calls: 897 in five months. In Bonham, the average map rank for "plumber near me" is 1.92, with 89% of the grid in the top 3.

Which keywords should a plumbing company target?

Target the searches that turn into booked jobs, grouped by intent. Plumbing keywords fall into four groups, and each group belongs on a different kind of page. Here is how we map them for a plumbing client:

IntentExample searchesWhere it ranksPage to build
Emergencyemergency plumber, 24 hour plumber, burst pipe repair, plumber open nowMap pack, LSAHome page, emergency page, profile hours
Servicewater heater repair, tankless water heater installation, drain cleaning, sewer line replacement, leak detection, repipingMap pack and organicOne service page each
Service + cityplumber [city], water heater repair [city], drain cleaning [city]Organic, map pack near your addressCity pages, and service pages that name your towns
Problem / researchwater heater leaking from bottom, why does my drain smell, how long do water heaters lastOrganic, AI answersGuides and FAQs that link to the service page
Commercialcommercial plumber, restaurant grease trap service, backflow testingMap pack and organicCommercial service pages

Use the words your customers use. Google's autocomplete is a free way to see them: type "water heater" and your town and look at what it suggests. Your own call recordings and job descriptions are better still, because they show the exact problems people call about.

Keyword proof

Hi-Desert Plumbing (Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley, CA) is what a keyword map looks like once it works. Average Google positions moved from 21.6 to 6.1 for "plumber yucca valley," 31.2 to 5.6 for "emergency plumber," 18.4 to 3.2 for "water heater repair," 17.6 to 4.3 for "tankless water heater" and 22.5 to 6.8 for "water heater installation." Search clicks grew 445%, from 453 to 2,460 (May–Aug). Its average map rank is 1.30 for "plumbing repair," and it is in the top 3 across 100% of the grid for "leak detection."

A few rules keep a keyword map honest:

  • One main keyword per page. Two pages chasing "water heater repair" compete with each other.
  • Lead with high-ticket work. A water heater replacement or a sewer line is worth many drain calls; give those pages the most depth.
  • Do not chase terms you cannot serve. Ranking for "septic pumping" when you do not pump septic tanks brings calls you have to turn away.
  • Track the keyword, the page and the calls together, so you know which keywords book jobs.

What service pages does a plumbing website need?

One dedicated page for every service you want calls for. It is the number one organic factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey, and it is where most plumbing sites fall short: a single "Services" page listing twenty jobs in bullet points cannot rank for any of them. Start with the services that bring the most revenue, then fill in the rest.

PageMain keywordWhat the page needs
Water heater repair & replacementwater heater repair [city]Tank vs. tankless, brands you service, signs it is time to replace, same-day availability
Tankless water heaterstankless water heater installationGas vs. electric, sizing, maintenance and descaling, brands you install
Drain cleaningdrain cleaning [city]Snaking vs. hydro jetting, camera inspections, kitchen, bath and main lines
Sewer line repair & replacementsewer line repair [city]Camera inspection, trenchless options, what a replacement involves
Leak detectionleak detection [city]Slab leaks, signs of a hidden leak, how you find it without tearing up floors
Repipingwhole house repipePipe materials you use, how long a repipe takes, what happens to walls
Emergency plumbingemergency plumber [city]Real response times, what to do before you arrive (where the shutoff is)
Toilets, faucets & fixturestoilet repair [city]Repairs vs. replacement, brands, quick fixes
Gas linesgas line repairLeak signs and safety steps, licensing
Commercial plumbingcommercial plumber [city]Industries you serve, backflow, grease traps, after-hours work

Each service page should follow the same build, because the same things win:

  • An answer first. Two or three sentences that say what the service is, where you do it and how fast. This is what AI answers and featured snippets lift.
  • Real detail. Brands, methods, what the visit looks like, how long it takes. Detail is what separates a page that ranks from a template.
  • Proof. Reviews that mention this service, photos from your own jobs.
  • The towns. Name your service areas and link to the city pages.
  • A clear way to call. A tap-to-call phone number at the top and after the main sections.
  • FAQs. The questions customers ask on the phone, answered plainly.

Should you show prices? That is a business decision. Many plumbers give a range or explain what drives cost (water heater type, pipe access, permit needs) without posting a number, and that still answers the question searchers are asking.

Do plumbers need city pages?

Yes, for every town you want calls from. Distance is the second-biggest map factor, so your profile alone will usually rank best near your address. City pages are how you reach the towns around it in organic results, and they strengthen your map rankings there too.

The catch: city pages only work when they are genuinely about that city. A page that swaps one town name into the same 500 words rarely ranks and can drag the whole site down. A good plumbing city page includes:

  • The services you do most in that town, linked to the service pages.
  • Local detail that is true: neighborhoods you work in, common housing stock (older homes with galvanized pipe, slab foundations, well water), local water hardness if it affects water heaters.
  • Jobs you have done there, with photos and a short note on the problem and the fix.
  • Reviews from customers in that town.
  • Your response time to that town and how to reach you.

Start with the towns that bring in the most revenue or that you most want to grow in, write five strong pages, and add more as they start ranking. Ten good pages beat fifty thin ones.

Killeen Plumbing Company (Westlake, OH) grew organic traffic 62.9%, from 1,370 visits in February to 2,233 in September 2026, and holds an average map rank of 2 for "commercial plumber," with 90% of its grid in the top 3. Maroon Plumbing (College Station, TX) tripled traffic for January–April vs. 2025 and now gets about 955 organic visits a month, up 205.1%.

What on-page SEO matters for a plumbing site?

On-page SEO is making each page say clearly, to people and to Google, what it is about and where. For plumbers it is mostly about titles, headings and links, and it is cheap to get right.

ElementTemplateExample
Title tagService in City | CompanyWater Heater Repair in McKinney, TX | Your Company
H1Service + city, in plain wordsWater heater repair in McKinney
Meta descriptionWhat you do, where, how fast, why trust youSame-day water heater repair and replacement in McKinney. Tank and tankless, licensed plumbers, 4.9 stars.
URL/service or /service-city/water-heater-repair
First paragraphAnswer the search directlyWe repair and replace tank and tankless water heaters across McKinney, usually the same day.
Internal linksService ↔ city ↔ home"water heater repair in Allen" links to the Allen page

And a checklist for every page before it goes live:

  • One H1 that names the service and city.
  • Subheadings that match real questions ("How long does a water heater last?").
  • Phone number as a tap-to-call link, in text, not only in an image.
  • Your business name, address and phone the same as on your Google profile.
  • Images compressed, with plain descriptive alt text.
  • At least three internal links to related services and towns.
  • No hidden text, no lists of 40 city names in the footer.

What technical SEO does a plumbing site need?

Less than most agencies suggest, but it has to be right. Technical SEO is making sure Google can find, load and understand every page. A plumbing site with 20 to 80 pages rarely needs exotic work; it needs the basics checked and kept clean.

CheckWhy it mattersHow to check

If you are moving to a new website, protect what already ranks: keep the URLs that get traffic, or redirect each old page to its new match. Rankings lost in a careless redesign can take months to win back. Our notes on plumbing websites that convert cover the design side.

How do reviews affect plumbing SEO?

Directly, in two ways. Star rating and the number of Google reviews with text are both top-10 map factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey. And reviews that mention a service and a town ("Fixed our tankless water heater in Allen the same day") tell Google, and AI tools, what you do and where.

The review process that works for plumbing companies is simple and boring:

  1. Ask at the end of every job, in person, when the customer is happiest.
  2. Send a text with your review link the same day.
  3. Ask the tech to mention the job and the town naturally ("If you mention the water heater, it helps other people in Sherman find us").
  4. Reply to every review, naming the service and the area.
  5. Never buy reviews, gate them (only asking happy customers through a filter) or offer discounts for them. All of these break Google's rules.

How many do you need? Enough to keep up with the top three in your market, and steady rather than in bursts. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

Yes, but not the way old SEO sold them. Link quality is the number three organic factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey, and the survey found that three of the top five AI search visibility factors are citation factors. In plain terms: being mentioned, accurately, on real sites matters more now that AI tools recommend businesses.

SourceExamplesWorth it?
Core citationsGoogle, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Angi, NextdoorYes, with identical name, address and phone
Trade and supplier sitesManufacturer dealer locators (water heater and fixture brands), supply houses, state plumbing associationsYes, real and relevant
Local sitesChamber of commerce, local news, sponsorships of teams and events, community pagesYes, they prove you are local
Bought link packages"500 backlinks for $99"No; they can hurt
Spun directoriesHundreds of low-quality listing sitesNo

The simplest high-value link work for a plumber: get listed on the dealer locator of every brand you install, sponsor something local, and make sure every listing matches your Google profile exactly.

What content should a plumbing company publish?

Answers to the questions customers ask before they call. A blog full of generic tips ("5 ways to save water") rarely brings a booked job. A page that answers "Why is my water heater leaking from the bottom?" and explains when to call can, because the person reading it often needs a plumber this week.

  • Problem guides: leaking water heater, no hot water, slow drains, sewer smell, running toilet, low water pressure.
  • Decision guides: tank vs. tankless, repair vs. replace, PEX vs. copper.
  • Local guides: what hard water does to water heaters in your area, freezing pipes and how to prevent them.
  • Every guide links to the matching service page and ends with how to reach you.

Keep your content fresh. Whitespark added freshness of service-page and site content as new factors in 2026. That does not mean rewriting pages every week; it means updating them when something changes (new brands, new towns, new photos) and adding real jobs.

AI assistants such as Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini increasingly answer "who is the best plumber near me" directly. They lean on the same foundations as local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details everywhere, real reviews that describe the work, and pages that answer questions plainly. Whitespark's 2026 survey added an AI visibility score for each factor and found citations among the most important.

What to do about it: answer common questions on your own site in short, direct paragraphs; keep your name, address and service list identical everywhere; and earn mentions on local and trade sites. No one can guarantee an AI recommendation. We track a set of prompts for your market each month and report what changes. More in getting named by AI search.

How long does plumbing SEO take?

It depends on your market, competition and starting point, but the pattern is consistent: profile fixes show first, then map gains, then organic pages.

StageTypical windowWhat you should see
Profile fixesWeeksMore calls and direction requests from the same rankings
Map pack gainsWeeks to a few monthsGrid coverage growing outward from your address
Service and city pagesA few months onwardNew ranking keywords, organic calls
Compounding6–12 months onwardMore towns, more services, steadier call volume

Real examples: Anderson Plumbing's owner says the phones were ringing more within about three months. Bodhi's own family business went from invisible on Google Maps in February 2026 to the top three by July. VeriTech Plumbing got 7× its calls in January–April 2026 compared with the same months a year earlier. Anyone who promises a fixed timeline or a guaranteed first-place ranking is guessing.

How do you measure plumbing SEO?

In calls and booked jobs. Rankings and traffic are useful signals, but a plumber pays the bills with jobs. Track these every month and compare the same months year over year, because plumbing demand moves with the seasons.

Plumbing SEO FAQ

What is plumbing SEO?

Plumbing SEO is the work that gets a plumbing company found in Google Maps, organic results and AI answers for searches like "plumber near me" or "water heater repair": Google Business Profile optimization, service and city pages, reviews, links and technical fixes.

What does a plumbing SEO company do?

It fixes and runs your Google Business Profile, builds service and city pages, handles on-page and technical SEO, runs a review process, builds real citations and links, and reports calls, map rankings and booked jobs every month.

How long does SEO take for plumbers?

Profile fixes can show within weeks, map gains within weeks to a few months, and organic pages after a few months. Anderson Plumbing's owner saw more calls within about three months. It depends on your market and starting point.

What keywords should plumbers target?

Emergency searches (emergency plumber, 24 hour plumber), service searches (water heater repair, drain cleaning, sewer line repair), service-plus-city searches, and problem searches such as "water heater leaking." Build a page for each main keyword.

Is local SEO the same as plumbing SEO?

Almost. Nearly every plumbing search is local, so plumbing SEO is mostly local SEO: the map pack, city pages and your Google Business Profile.

Can I put keywords in my Google Business Profile name?

No. Google requires your real business name. Adding words like "Emergency Plumber" can get the profile suspended.

Do plumbers need a blog?

Not a generic one. Pages that answer customer problems, like a leaking water heater or a sewer smell, and link to the matching service page are worth more than general tips.

Does SEO work better than Google Ads for plumbers?

They do different jobs. Ads bring calls now and stop when you stop paying; SEO takes longer and keeps producing calls. Most growing plumbing companies run both.

How many reviews does a plumber need?

Enough to keep pace with the top three in your market, earned steadily. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

Can anyone guarantee first place on Google?

No. Rankings depend on Google, your location and your competitors. Ask for real client results and clear reporting instead.
