Local Service Ads vs Google Ads
for HVAC: which to run first.

A side-by-side comparison for heating and cooling companies deciding where their next ad dollar goes.

Short answer

Local Services Ads charge per lead, sit at the very top of Google, and rank mostly on reviews, distance and responsiveness. Google Ads (search ads) charge per click, sit below LSA, and let you pick exact keywords, write your own ads and send people to your website. For most HVAC companies LSA is the cheaper first step, and search ads fill the gaps it can't reach. The strongest companies run both.

"Should I run LSA or Google Ads?" is one of the first questions HVAC owners ask about paid search. They're both Google, they both show up when someone searches "AC repair near me", and they're managed in the same Google Ads account. But they work very differently. This page compares them side by side so you can decide where your first dollar goes. For the full LSA setup, see our HVAC Local Services Ads guide; for search campaigns, see HVAC Google Ads management.

What is the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?

Local Services Ads are pay-per-lead listings with a Google verification badge, built automatically from your profile and ranked on reviews, proximity, responsiveness and bid. Google Ads search campaigns are pay-per-click text ads you write yourself, targeted by keywords you choose and ranked by bid and ad quality. LSA shows first; search ads show below it.

Is LSA cheaper than Google Ads for HVAC?

Usually, per lead. Public 2026 benchmarks put the average HVAC Local Services Ad lead at roughly $50–$65, and one large benchmark found LSA leads cost a third to half as much as leads from non-branded search ads. But prices vary a lot by market, competition and bidding, and search ads can still win on the jobs you want most.

The AdGenius LSA benchmark reported a $59 median HVAC lead in June 2026, with most accounts between $36 and $85. The full cost breakdown, with more sources, is in the LSA cost per lead section. These are Google's auction prices, not ours, and they move with your market, the season and how many competitors bid.

Search ads work differently: you pay for each click, and only some clicks call. Your cost per lead depends on your keywords, your ads, your landing page and how well your site turns visitors into calls. A strong landing page lowers it; a weak one raises it. That's why we build the website for conversion before scaling search spend.

Which gives an HVAC company more control?

Google Ads, by far. With search campaigns you choose the exact keywords, write the ads, set bids by keyword, location, time and device, add negative keywords, and choose the landing page. With LSA you choose job types, service area, hours, budget and a bidding mode, and Google handles the rest.

That control matters when you want specific work. If you want more heat pump installs, ductless jobs or system replacements in a few towns, search ads let you bid hard on exactly those searches and send people to a page built for that job. LSA treats leads more broadly within each job type you turn on.

When should an HVAC company start with LSA?

Start with LSA when you have a valid license and insurance, can pass background checks, already have a solid number of reviews, and can answer calls live during business hours. It's quicker to run well than search ads, needs no landing page, and you only pay for leads.

  • Small or new budget. You pay for leads, not clicks you have to convert.
  • Strong reviews. LSA rewards a high rating and review count.
  • A tight service area close to your shop, where you rank best.
  • Someone answers every call. Responsiveness is a ranking factor.
  • No conversion-ready website yet. LSA doesn't need one.

When should an HVAC company add Google Ads search campaigns?

Add search ads when LSA is spending its budget and you want more leads, when you want to push high-value jobs like replacements and installs, when you serve towns where LSA rarely shows you, or when you have a landing page that converts. Search ads reach the keywords and places LSA can't.

  • LSA is maxed out. You're spending the budget and want more volume.
  • High-value jobs. Bid on "AC replacement", "heat pump installation" and similar searches with their own pages.
  • Farther towns. LSA favors proximity; search ads can target any town you serve.
  • Brand protection. Show up when people search your company name.
  • A converting website. Search ads pay off when the page turns clicks into calls.

Should HVAC companies run LSA and Google Ads together?

Yes, once the budget allows. LSA and search ads show in different spots on the same results page, so running both, plus a top-three map listing, takes up most of the first screen. Run them from the same Google Ads account, track calls from each, and move budget to whichever books more jobs per dollar.

Think of the first screen as three spots: LSA at the top, search ads under it, then the map pack. Each one you hold is a chance at the call. Map rankings cost nothing per click and keep working, so build them alongside the paid spots, not instead of them. The map side is covered in our HVAC Google Maps ranking guide and Google Business Profile guide.

  1. Get your Google Business Profile right and keep reviews coming every week.
  2. Launch LSA in the towns closest to your shop, with honest hours and only the job types you want.
  3. Track every lead to a booked job and revenue, by source.
  4. Add search campaigns for high-value jobs and farther towns, sending clicks to job-specific landing pages.
  5. Add brand and negative keywords to protect your name and cut wasted clicks.
  6. Shift budget monthly toward the channel with the lowest cost per booked job.

Which should you use for common HVAC situations?

Use LSA for everyday repair and service calls near your shop, search ads for high-value installs, replacements and farther towns, and both during peak season. If your profile is suspended or you're new with few reviews, search ads can carry you while you fix the profile.

What mistakes do HVAC companies make running LSA and Google Ads together?

The common ones are counting the same lead twice, judging both on the wrong number, letting search ads chase repair calls LSA already wins, skipping negative keywords, and sending search clicks to the homepage instead of a page for the job.

  • Double counting. A homeowner can see both ads; track by unique caller, not by lead.
  • Wrong metric. Cheap leads that don't book aren't cheap.
  • Overlapping spend. Point search budget at the jobs and towns LSA doesn't win.
  • No negatives. Block "jobs", "salary", "DIY", "parts" and services you don't offer.
  • Homepage landing pages. A page built for "heat pump installation" converts better than a generic homepage.
  • Ignoring the map. Paid spots stop the day budget stops; map rankings keep working.

How do you compare LSA and Google Ads results?

Compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead or per click. Track every call and message to whether it booked and what the job was worth, by source. A cheap lead that never books is expensive; a pricier lead that turns into a system replacement is cheap.

Count four numbers for each channel every month: spend, leads, booked jobs and revenue. Divide spend by booked jobs. Then look at what kind of jobs each brought in. One channel may bring more repair calls and the other more installs; your own numbers decide where the next dollar goes.

Local Service Ads vs Google Ads FAQ

What is the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?

Local Services Ads charge per lead, show at the very top of Google with a verification badge and are built automatically from your profile. Google Ads search campaigns charge per click, show below LSA and let you choose keywords, write ads and pick landing pages.

Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads for HVAC?

Per lead, usually. Public 2026 benchmarks put HVAC LSA leads around $50 to $65 on average, and one benchmark found LSA leads cost a third to half as much as non-branded search ad leads. Prices vary by market, competition and bidding.

Should an HVAC company run LSA or Google Ads first?

Most should start with LSA if they can pass verification, have solid reviews and answer calls live. Add search ads when LSA is spending its full budget, or when you want specific high-value jobs or farther towns.

Can I run Local Services Ads and Google Ads at the same time?

Yes. They appear in different spots on the results page and are managed from the same Google Ads account. Running both, plus a strong map listing, covers most of the first screen.

Which gives more control, LSA or Google Ads?

Google Ads. You pick exact keywords, negatives, ad copy, bids, schedules and landing pages. LSA lets you set job types, service areas, hours, budget and bidding mode, and Google handles the rest.

How do I know whether LSA or Google Ads is working better?

Compare cost per booked job and revenue per dollar for each, not cost per lead or per click. Tag every call and message by source and track it through to the invoice.
