Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile
for plumbers.

A field-by-field Google Business Profile setup for plumbing companies: verification, categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, reviews and the weekly routine that keeps calls coming, with results from plumbing companies we work with.

Short answer

A Google Business Profile for plumbers works when every field is filled in truthfully and kept current: your real business name, "Plumber" as the primary category, secondary categories only for work you do, every plumbing service listed, up to 20 service areas, hours you actually answer, real photos every month, a link to the right page on your site, and a steady flow of reviews you reply to. Set it up once properly, then maintain it weekly. This page is the field-by-field setup; for ranking strategy, see Google Maps for plumbers.

Why does a plumbing company need an optimized Google Business Profile?

Because for most plumbing companies it is the single biggest source of calls. The profile is what shows in the Google Maps 3-pack, in the map app, on the right side of desktop search when someone looks you up, and as data in Local Services Ads and AI answers. A homeowner with water on the floor often decides from the profile alone: stars, review count, hours, photos, a call button. Many never see your website.

It is also free. You do not pay Google per call from your profile, which is why the plumbing companies we work with track it as their lowest cost-per-booked-job channel once it is built. The work is in setting it up correctly and keeping it alive.

Plumber Google Business Profile checklist: the order that matters

Work through it top to bottom. The first five items do most of the ranking work; the rest make the profile convert and keep it healthy.

  1. Claim or create the profile and verify it.
  2. Set the business name exactly as it appears on your trucks, signage and paperwork.
  3. Choose your business type: storefront, service-area or hybrid.
  4. Set the primary category to "Plumber."
  5. Add secondary categories for work you genuinely do.
  6. List every plumbing service, predefined and custom.
  7. Set up to 20 service areas you actually serve.
  8. Set regular, holiday and (if true) 24-hour hours.
  9. Use a local phone number that a person answers.
  10. Link to the matching page on your website.
  11. Write a plain-English business description.
  12. Add attributes that apply.
  13. Upload real photos and keep adding them monthly.
  14. Start a review process and reply to every review.
  15. Turn on messages or bookings only if someone responds fast.
  16. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere else.
  17. Set a weekly maintenance routine.

How do I claim and verify a plumbing Google Business Profile?

Search for your business on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com using the Google account the company will own long term (not a tech's personal account). Then verify. Google chooses the method, and for plumbers it is often a video: a short, continuous recording that shows your location or branded vehicle, tools of the trade and proof you manage the business.

  • Have proof ready. Branded truck, business license, utility bill or registration with the same name and address.
  • Record in one take. Start outside (street sign or building), show the truck or office, then show tools, equipment or paperwork.
  • Do not change details mid-verification. Editing the name, address or category while Google reviews can restart the process.
  • Keep ownership with the company. Add your office manager or agency as managers, not owners, so nobody leaving takes the profile with them.

Google decides which verification methods you are offered, based on business type, region, hours and public information, and some businesses have to complete more than one. For a plumber without a shop, the video recording method asks for three things:

ShowPlumber example
Where you operateStreet signs or landmarks near the address you entered; a home-based plumber can film the street and nearby signs
That the business existsBranded van or truck, tools and equipment, uniforms, business cards
That you manage itUnlocking the branded van, opening the tool storage, or a license, invoice or utility bill in the business name

Record it live on a phone, in one continuous take of at least 30 seconds, without filming other people's faces; Google does not accept an edited or pre-recorded upload. Reviews usually take up to 5 business days. Two more rules matter later: changing the name, category or address can trigger another verification, and Google's bulk verification is not available to service-area businesses, so a multi-location plumber without storefronts verifies each profile individually.

What name, address and phone number should a plumbing profile use?

Your real-world business name, your real address (shown or hidden, below) and a local number that rings to a person. Google's guidelines say the name must match what customers see on your signage, vehicles and paperwork. Adding "24/7 Emergency Plumber Dallas" to a name called "Smith Plumbing" breaks the rules; competitors can report it and Google can suspend the profile, which stops every call at once.

FieldDoDon't
Name"Smith Plumbing" (or "Smith Plumbing & Drain" if that is the legal or branded name)"Smith Plumbing – Emergency Plumber Dallas TX"
AddressA real office or shop you operate fromVirtual offices, mailbox stores, a relative's house
PhoneLocal number, answered live or by an answering service that booksA number that rings to voicemail

Should a plumber set up as a storefront, service-area or hybrid business?

Most plumbers are service-area businesses: you go to the customer, not the other way round. Google itself uses plumbers as its example. Pick the type that matches reality:

TypeUse it whenAddress shown?
Service-area businessYou work from home or a yard customers do not visitNo; hide it and set service areas
HybridYou have a staffed office or showroom customers can visit, and you also send trucksYes, plus service areas
StorefrontCustomers come to you (rare for plumbers, common for supply showrooms)Yes

Two rules from Google's service-area help page that trip plumbers up: a service-area business "can only have one profile for the whole area that they serve," and your service area should not extend more than about two hours' drive from where you are based. If you want profiles in more markets, you need genuinely separate locations, like Underwood Plumbing's three in McKinney, Bonham and Sherman, or Anderson Plumbing growing from one to about five.

What is the best Google Business Profile category for a plumber?

"Plumber," as your primary category. It is the #1 map-pack factor in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, and it matches the broadest searches ("plumber," "plumber near me," "plumbers in [town]"). Choosing something narrower, like "Water heater installation service," as primary can cost you those searches.

Then add secondary categories only for services that are a real part of your business. Common, legitimate options for plumbers:

  • Drainage service
  • Water heater installation service
  • Septic system service
  • Gas installation service
  • Water softening equipment supplier
  • Bathroom remodeler (only if you do full remodels)
  • Water damage restoration service (only if you do restoration work)
  • HVAC contractor or Air conditioning contractor (if you also do heating and cooling)

If you also run an HVAC division, see the HVAC Google Business Profile guide for those categories.

What services should a plumber list on Google?

Every service you want calls for. Google offers predefined services for the "Plumber" category; tick all that apply, then add custom services in the words customers use. Whitespark's 2026 survey ranked predefined services #22 and keywords in custom service titles #30 among map-pack factors, both new to the list this year.

GroupServices to list
EmergencyEmergency plumbing, burst pipe repair, 24-hour plumber (if true)
Water heatersWater heater repair, water heater replacement, tankless water heater installation, tankless descaling
Drains & sewerDrain cleaning, hydro jetting, sewer camera inspection, sewer line repair, trenchless sewer replacement
Leaks & pipesLeak detection, slab leak repair, repiping, pipe repair
FixturesToilet repair and installation, faucet repair, garbage disposal installation, sump pump installation
OtherGas line repair, water softener installation, backflow testing, commercial plumbing

Give each custom service a one- or two-sentence description: what it is and where you do it. Keep it honest and readable; a description stuffed with town names reads as spam to customers and does little for ranking.

How should a plumber set service areas?

List the cities, ZIP codes or areas you actually drive to, up to Google's limit of 20. Service areas tell customers where you work; they do not override distance, so listing a town 40 minutes away will not, on its own, make you rank there. Start with the towns closest to you and the ones that bring the most revenue. Reaching further towns is a job for city pages, reviews from those towns and, where you have them, real additional locations.

What hours should a plumbing profile show?

The hours a person really answers the phone. "Business is open at time of search" ranked #5 for the map pack in Whitespark's 2026 survey, so hours matter more for plumbers than for almost any other trade: burst pipes and sewer backups do not wait for Monday.

  • 24-hour hours only if you or an answering service that books jobs picks up at night.
  • Holiday hours before every holiday, so the profile never shows "Closed" when you are open, or the reverse.
  • Consistent hours across your profile, website and Local Services Ads. Google uses your profile hours to decide when missed LSA calls count as charged leads (LSA for plumbers).

Three hours tools are worth using. Special hours handle holidays and one-off changes. Temporarily closed is for longer closures; Google says closures of seven days or less should use special hours instead. And for a 24-hour company, choose "Opens at" then "24 hours" for each day, rather than writing "24/7" into the name, which breaks Google's naming rules.

How should a plumber write the business description and attributes?

For people first. Google allows up to 750 characters. Say what you do, where, how fast and what makes you different, in plain sentences. Mention your main services and towns once, naturally. No links, no prices that change, no keyword lists.

Example description

Smith Plumbing is a family-owned plumbing company serving McKinney, Allen, Frisco and Prosper since 2009. We repair and replace water heaters (tank and tankless), clear drains and sewer lines, find and fix leaks, and repipe homes. Licensed plumbers answer the phone 24 hours a day, and most repairs are done the same day. Upfront options before any work starts.

Attributes are the tags Google offers (for example, "Online estimates," "Onsite services," identity attributes such as veteran-owned or women-owned). Add every one that is true; they show on the profile and help customers choose.

What photos should a plumbing company post on Google, and how often?

Real ones, every month. Whitespark's 2026 survey lists the relevance of photos to your categories as a new map-pack factor, and photo quality ranked among the top conversion factors. For plumbers that means:

PhotoWhy
Logo and coverRecognizable at a glance
Branded trucksProves you are established and local
Techs in uniformBuilds trust before they knock on the door
Before-and-after jobsWater heater swaps, repipes, sewer repairs, clean installs
The shop or officeSupports the address if shown
Team photosCustomers like to see who is coming

Aim for a few new photos a week from the field; most techs already take job photos for invoices. Skip stock images and anything with a customer's face or address visible.

Google's technical rules are simple. Photos should be JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, ideally 720 × 720 pixels (at least 250 × 250), in focus, well lit and without heavy filters. Videos can be up to 30 seconds, 75 MB and 720p or higher. Uploads are reviewed before they go live and show only on verified profiles. Set the logo and cover photo separately, and keep adding job photos rather than uploading a year's worth at once.

Do Google Business Profile posts help plumbers?

A little, mostly for conversion rather than ranking. Two rules keep posts live: do not put a phone number in the post text (Google may reject it; the call button already uses your profile number), and expect posts older than six months to be archived unless they have a date range. Posts show that the business is active and give you a place for seasonal messages: freeze warnings and pipe tips in winter, water heater flushes in spring, sump pump checks before storm season, holiday hours. One or two posts a month, with a real photo, is plenty. Do not use posts for keyword stuffing.

How do plumbers get more Google reviews?

Ask every customer, the same day, with a direct link. Google's own review tips recommend reminding customers to leave reviews and replying to them. Star rating (#6) and number of reviews with text (#9) are both top-ten map factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey, and reviews with photos were added as a new factor. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

  1. The tech asks in person at the end of the job: "If you were happy, a Google review really helps us."
  2. The office sends a text with your review link within an hour.
  3. The link opens straight to the review box (copy it from your profile's "Ask for reviews" option).
  4. Let customers write in their own words. Do not script what they say: Google treats requests for reviews with specific content as manipulation.
  5. You reply to every review within a day or two, naming the service and area.

What not to do: buy reviews, offer discounts for them, ask only happy customers through a filter, or post reviews from staff or family. All of these break Google's rules and can get reviews removed or the profile restricted. For negative reviews, reply calmly, offer to make it right offline, and never argue in public; future customers read your replies as closely as the review.

Get the link from your profile under "Ask for reviews" (Google can also generate a QR code from a computer) and put it in the job-complete text, the invoice email and a card the tech leaves behind. Customers need to be signed in to a Google account to post.

Google's review policies are stricter than many plumbers realize:

PracticeAllowed?
Asking every customer for an honest reviewYes
Offering a discount, gift or entry into a drawing for a reviewNo
Asking only happy customers, or filtering unhappy ones to a private form firstNo
Setting a quota for techs to collect a number of reviewsNo; Google names staff quotas as manipulation
Asking customers to mention a tech by name or use certain wordsNo; requests for specific content count as manipulation
Reviews from employees, subcontractors or familyNo; conflict of interest
Replying to every review as the businessYes, after the profile is verified

The penalties can include blocking new reviews for a period, removing existing ones or showing a warning on the profile that fake reviews were removed. When a plumbing customer reviews you, Google may ask which job you did, drawn from your services list, and show it with the review. That is one more reason to keep services complete.

If a review breaks Google's rules (spam, a competitor, someone who was never a customer), report it from the profile or Google's Reviews Management Tool and track it there; if the report is rejected you can appeal. Do not report reviews just because they are negative. And if a sudden wave of one-star reviews arrives with a demand for money, do not pay or engage: Google treats that as extortion and has a dedicated reporting form.

Should plumbers turn on messaging and bookings?

Only if someone will respond within minutes. A message left unanswered for a day is a lost job and a poor experience. If your office or answering service can reply quickly, turn messaging on; many people text when they cannot talk, especially at work or late at night. If you use online booking through your field software, connect it so customers can book directly.

A note on questions: Google removed Q&A from Google Maps in December 2025. Answers that used to live in your profile's Q&A (do you do tankless? do you charge for estimates? how fast can you come?) now belong in the FAQ on your website, where they also help plumbing SEO and AI answers.

In regions where Google offers it, a verified profile can also show a WhatsApp or text-message contact option. If you add both, customers see only the text option. Whichever you use, it should reach the same office team that answers calls.

How do I keep a plumbing company's listings consistent?

Use exactly the same name, address and phone (NAP) on every listing. Whitespark's 2026 survey found three of the top five AI search visibility factors are citation factors, so consistent listings now help with AI recommendations as well as maps. Check and correct these first:

  • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect (they feed Bing, Apple Maps and many AI tools).
  • Yelp, BBB, Angi, Nextdoor, Houzz.
  • Dealer locators for the water heater and fixture brands you install.
  • Your website footer and contact page.
  • Your Local Services Ads profile.
  • Your field software and invoice templates (they are what customers see).

How do plumbers keep a Google Business Profile from being suspended?

Plumbing is one of the categories Google watches most closely, because of a long history of fake listings. The most common causes of suspension we see:

CauseFix
Keywords added to the business nameUse your real name only
Virtual office or mailbox addressUse a real location or switch to service-area
More than one service-area profile for the same businessOne profile per real location
Big edits all at once (name, address, category)Change one thing at a time, with documentation ready
Service area far beyond where you are basedKeep it within about two hours' drive
Reviews from fake accounts or incentivized reviewsClean review process only

If it happens, do not create a new profile. File a reinstatement request with your proof (license, registration, photos of signage and vehicles). The step-by-step is in our suspended Google Business Profile guide; the process is the same for plumbers.

How do you maintain a plumbing Google Business Profile week to week?

How oftenTask
Every jobAsk for a review; send the link
DailyReply to new reviews and messages
WeeklyUpload new job photos; check for suggested edits from Google or the public
MonthlyOne or two posts; check calls and interactions vs. last year; run a ranking grid
Before holidaysSet holiday hours
QuarterlyReview services and categories; check listings for NAP drift

Watch for "suggested edits": anyone can propose changes to your profile, and Google sometimes accepts them automatically. A competitor or a well-meaning customer can change your hours or category without you noticing. Check the profile weekly and reject anything wrong.

Client proof

Underwood Plumbing runs three profiles, one per real location in McKinney, Bonham and Sherman, TX, maintained to this routine. From April to August 2026 they produced 897 calls: 177, 172, 208, 183 and 157 by month. Joe Cole Plumbing in Davie, FL ranks #1 of 225 competitors for "plumber," with an average map rank of 1.92 for "plumber Davie."

How should a plumbing company with several locations handle Google Business Profiles?

One profile per real, staffed location, each with its own local phone number, its own hours and a link to its own location page. Do not copy the same description, photos and services across every profile; write each one for its town and post photos from jobs that location ran. Use a single owner account for all of them (Google lets you manage them as a group) so access never sits with one manager.

DoDon't
Open profiles only for locations with staff, signage and a real addressCreate profiles for towns where you only have a mailing address
Give each a local number and its own location pagePoint every profile to the home page
Run reviews per location (separate review links)Send every customer to the main location's link
Track calls and jobs per locationReport all profiles as one number

Expansion has to follow real operations. Anderson Plumbing went from one profile to about five as it opened real locations, and the owner estimates 700–800 new customers from that growth. Underwood Plumbing runs three.

Client proof

NexAir, a plumbing and HVAC company in Huntington, WV, runs five Google Business Profiles, one per real market. Owner Jeremy Payne has said that before working with us the company was "nowhere to be found on maps after 12 months, even though we had been smoking reviews." Reviews alone had not fixed an incomplete profile. Those five profiles produced 841 calls from April to September 2026, and revenue grew from about $1M to $4M.

How does the Google Business Profile connect to a plumber's website?

The profile gets the call; the website backs it up. Google compares what your profile says with what your site says, and customers click through to check you before calling. Each profile should link to a page that repeats the same name, address and phone, lists the same services, names the towns you serve and shows reviews and photos. For a water heater or drain search, a matching service page gives Google a second signal that you do that job.

  • Location page per profile, with an embedded map, hours and local photos.
  • A service page for each major category you add (drainage, water heaters, sewer). See service and city pages.
  • Fast, mobile-first pages with a tap-to-call button near the top. Our plumbing website design guide covers the layout; it applies to plumbers unchanged.
  • Call tracking that keeps your main number on the profile, so the NAP stays consistent while you still measure sources.

If you add appointment or booking links, Google requires them to go to a page on your own site (for multi-location companies, the right location page). Social media, messaging links and link shorteners are not accepted, and Google may remove links it cannot crawl.

Yes, indirectly. When someone asks Google's AI features, ChatGPT or another assistant for a plumber nearby, the answer is built from data about your business: your profile, your reviews, listings on other sites and your website. A complete, consistent profile with many recent reviews that mention specific jobs gives those systems more to work with. Whitespark's 2026 survey found three of the top five AI search visibility factors are citation factors, which is why listing consistency (below) matters more than it used to. Our guide to AI search for plumbers goes deeper.

What are the most common plumbing Google Business Profile mistakes?

Most of these take minutes to fix, and the fix shows up in calls quickly because the profile is already being seen. If you are weighing whether to do this in-house or with help, our guide on how to choose a plumbing marketing agency lists the questions to ask, including who owns the profile.

They work together. Your profile's reviews appear on your Local Services Ads, and strong organic and map visibility lowers how much you need to buy. Most plumbing companies we work with run all three, starting with the profile. See Local Services Ads for plumbers, Google Ads for plumbers and the plumbing lead generation guide for how the channels compare.

How do you measure a plumbing Google Business Profile?

Use the profile\'s own performance report and compare the same months year over year, because plumbing demand rises and falls with freezes, heat and holidays.

MetricWhat it tells you
CallsThe headline number; most plumbing jobs start with a call
Website clicksCustomers checking you out before calling
Direction requestsMostly relevant if you show an address
Bookings and messagesIf enabled
Searches that found youWhich terms bring you up (in the performance report)
Ranking gridHow visible you are across your service area
Booked jobs from GoogleYour field software, by lead source

Then tie it to money. A profile call is only worth something if it is answered and booked, so track answer rate and booked jobs by source; see cost per booked job on the hub, and the plumbing marketing budget guide for how the profile fits into spend.

A few details make the performance report easier to read. Search terms update at the start of each month and can lag by a few days. Profile views count unique visitors once per day across Search and Maps. Calls only count taps on the call button, so you need the phone number on the profile, and none of the numbers is a ranking position; Google says you cannot pay for better local ranking. If you run several profiles, download them together as a spreadsheet to compare locations.

Google Business Profile for plumbers FAQ

What is the best Google Business Profile category for a plumber?

"Plumber" as the primary category. Add secondary categories such as "Drainage service" or "Water heater installation service" only for work you actually do.

Can a plumber have a Google Business Profile without a storefront?

Yes. Most plumbers are service-area businesses: hide the address and set up to 20 service areas. Google allows one profile for the whole area a service-area business serves.

How do plumbers verify a Google Business Profile?

Google chooses the method; for plumbers it is often a video showing your location or branded vehicle, tools and proof you manage the business. Keep your details unchanged while verification is pending.

Can I add keywords to my plumbing business name on Google?

No. The name must match your real-world name on signage, vehicles and paperwork. Keyword stuffing can get the profile suspended.

How many service areas can a plumber add?

Up to 20, by city, postal code or area, and the overall area should be within about two hours' drive of where you are based.

Should a plumber show 24-hour hours?

Only if a person or a booking answering service truly answers at night. Accurate hours help with emergency searches, and profile hours also decide when missed Local Services Ads calls are charged.

How often should a plumber post photos on Google?

A few new real photos a week is a good pace: trucks, techs, before-and-after jobs. Photo quality and the relevance of photos to your categories are both factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey.

Do Google posts help plumbers rank?

Only a little. Posts mainly show the business is active and help conversion. One or two seasonal posts a month is enough.

How do plumbers get more Google reviews?

Ask in person at the end of every job, text the review link the same day and reply to every review. Our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews per month.

Can a plumber offer a discount for Google reviews?

No. Google prohibits offering money, discounts or free services for reviews, asking only happy customers, and setting review quotas for staff. Ask every customer for an honest review instead.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take for a plumber?

Google says reviews of a verification usually take up to 5 business days. Service-area plumbers are often asked for a live video showing the area, branded vehicle or tools, and proof they manage the business.

Is Google Maps Q&A still available for plumbers?

No. Google removed Q&A from Maps in December 2025. Put those answers in the FAQ on your website.
