Local Services Ads for plumbers are Google's pay-per-lead ads at the very top of search, shown with the Google Verified badge. You pay for calls, messages and bookings, not clicks. To do well: pass Google's screening, choose only the job types you want, keep your hours accurate, answer every call, build reviews and dispute or get credit for bad leads. Plumbing lead costs vary by market and season: most accounts paid about $43 to $95 in AdGenius's June 2026 data, and SearchLight measured a $57 average in February 2026. Google is moving these ads into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals from August 2026.
What are Google Local Services Ads for plumbers?
Local Services Ads (LSA) are the ads at the top of Google for searches like "plumber near me" or "water heater repair," showing a business name, rating, review count, hours, service area and a Google Verified badge. Google's overview lists what the ad can show: your name, a tracking phone number, location, reviews, hours, the badge, photos and a short bio. Customers call or message straight from the ad, and you pay per lead.
| Local Services Ads | Google Ads (search) | Google Business Profile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay | Per lead | Per click | Nothing |
| Badge | Google Verified | None | None |
| Keywords | None; you choose job types | You choose keywords | None |
| Ranking | Proximity, reviews, responsiveness, profile, budget | Bid and ad quality | Relevance, distance, prominence |
| Placement | Top of results | Sponsored results | Map pack |

What does Google Verified mean for plumbers?
It is the badge on your Local Services Ad that shows you passed Google's checks. It replaced the old "Google Guaranteed" badge; the guarantee program ended on December 7, 2025. Google's badge page says existing advertisers received the Google Verified badge automatically. Google says the badge shows on your Local Services Ads profile and may appear on other Google surfaces, with the specific checks you passed called out. If you mention it in your own marketing, call it Google Verified, not a guarantee.
How do plumbers get verified for Local Services Ads?
Through Google's screening, which for plumbing can include background checks, business registration, insurance and license checks, plus a minimum number of reviews. Google uses third-party partners, and advertisers are re-evaluated over time, so keep documents current.
- Create the profile. Create your Local Services profile at ads.google.com/local-services-ads with the same name, address and phone as your Google Business Profile.
- Pick category and job types. Choose "Plumber" and the job types you want.
- Set area and hours. Set your service area and hours.
- Upload documents. Submit your plumbing license, insurance and business registration.
- Finish background checks. Complete background checks for the owner and, depending on location, technicians.
- Link your Business Profile. Link your Google Business Profile so reviews show.
- Set budget and bidding. Set a weekly budget and bidding mode.
- Get verified. Wait for approval; Google offers accelerated verification in some cases, with 14 days to finish the steps.
Common holdups: a license name that does not match the business name, expired insurance certificates, and background checks that a tech has not completed. Gather everything before you start.
A few details from Google's screening page save plumbers weeks:
| Check | What Google asks for | Plumber tip |
|---|---|---|
| Background checks | Business, owners and, in applicable categories, every field worker who serves customers (employees and subcontractors); identity and criminal history, no credit pull; free to the business | Office staff who never go to homes do not need one. Send the list of techs early; one unfinished check holds up the account |
| Business registration (US) | A D-U-N-S number, or a Secretary of State registration, EIN letter or Department of Revenue registration | Look up your D-U-N-S number first; applying for a new one can take up to 30 days |
| Business representative | The person setting up the account is confirmed through Dun & Bradstreet data and a government photo ID | The representative's name and the legal business name must match exactly across documents |
| Insurance | A signed certificate of insurance, valid at least 14 days after you submit, with a policy number, at or above the minimum shown in your dashboard | Use the same name you advertise under, or add a DBA document |
| Licenses | State-level business and owner licenses where required; you confirm local and technician licensing | Verified licenses are shown on your profile, which helps customers choose |
| Google Business Profile | A public, verified profile linked to the ad; the person doing the checks must be an owner or manager | Fix profile access before you start |
Google says the process averages 3 to 4 weeks after documents are submitted, and plumbing is treated as an urgent category with an extra level of screening for service professionals. If a business fails the background check, it must wait 30 days to reapply, and 180 days after a second denial, so resolve any errors with the background check partner before resubmitting.
How much do Local Services Ads cost for plumbers?
Costs vary a lot by market and job type, so read these as ranges, not quotes. AdGenius's 2026 Local Services Ads cost benchmark (June 2026 data) found:
| Plumbing LSA benchmark | Cost |
|---|---|
| Low (10th percentile) cost per lead | $43 |
| Typical (median) cost per lead | $71 |
| High (90th percentile) cost per lead | $95 |
| Approx. cost per paying customer (about 1 in 5 leads) | $319 |
| West region average lead | $85 |
| Midwest and Northeast average lead | $62 |
| State range | $53 (Wisconsin) to $89 (Washington) |
Two more findings from the same benchmark matter for budgeting. Average home-service LSA lead costs rose from $53 in February to $62.56 in June 2026, about 18% in four months. And LSA leads cost roughly a third to half as much as non-branded Google Ads leads in Q1 2026, which is why most plumbers run LSA before or alongside search ads. Drain and sewer leads had the lowest booking rate of the plumbing job types, at 39.5%, so watch how those leads convert for you.
For comparison, the benchmark put HVAC leads at $36 low, $59 typical and $85 high; see Local Services Ads for HVAC. To set an overall budget, use the plumbing marketing budget guide.
A second, earlier dataset tells a similar story. SearchLight Digital's February 2026 LSA benchmark covered 230 plumbing accounts and $2.03 million in spend:
| SearchLight, Feb 2026 | Cost per lead | Booking rate | Average ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbing (230 accounts) | $57 | 44.5% | $1,714 |
| Drain and sewer (23 accounts) | $59 | 39.5% | $1,521 |
| All home services (888 accounts) | $53 | 43.9% | $1,826 |
Where you operate moves the price as much as the trade. AdGenius mapped June 2026 leads by ZIP code across all home-service trades:
| Region (all trades, June 2026) | Average cost per lead |
|---|---|
| West | $85 |
| Southwest | $72 |
| Southeast | $72 |
| Northeast | $62 |
| Midwest | $62 |
Read every number on this page as a range that varies by market, season and job type, not a price you will pay. February figures are winter snapshots; the same platform's average rose about 18% by June. The useful habit is to compare your own cost per lead with your own region and month last year, and to judge the channel on cost per booked job.
What counts as a charged lead in Local Services Ads?
According to Google's "How leads work", you can be charged for:
| Lead type | Charged when |
|---|---|
| Answered call | The call connects to your business |
| Missed call | During your operating hours, if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds (with a phone menu, the timer starts at the first key press) |
| Voicemail or greeting | Treated as connected |
| Message | A customer sends a message through the ad |
| Booking | A customer books through the ad |
Your operating hours are your Google Business Profile hours combined with your ad schedule. That has a practical meaning for plumbers: if your profile says you are open but nobody answers, missed calls can still be charged. A repeat call or message from the same customer within 15 days is not charged again. Google credits some low-quality leads, and you can mark leads in the app so the system learns which are real.
- Keep profile hours and ad schedule aligned with when people truly answer.
- Turn off job types you do not do; they create leads you pay for and cannot use.
- Mark every lead in the app: booked, not booked, or a problem lead.
- Review leads weekly and rate the ones that are clearly invalid (wrong service, outside your area, spam).

Book a Growth CallGoogle now handles lead quality automatically rather than through a manual dispute form. Its automated lead credit policy sorts leads into these statuses:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Not charged | Google judged the lead invalid or low quality at the start |
| Charged | A valid lead you pay for |
| In review | Google is reassessing a charged lead |
| Credited | Money returned after review; most credits are applied within 30 days |
One change catches plumbers out: Google no longer credits leads just because the job type or location was outside what you service. If "sewer line replacement" or a far-off town is switched on, those calls are your cost. Keep job types and service areas tight, and still rate leads in the feedback survey, because Google says that feedback helps it learn which leads you want.
How do plumbers rank higher in Local Services Ads?
There are no keywords to bid on, so ranking comes from your profile and behavior. Google points to proximity to the customer, reviews, responsiveness, profile quality and your bid and budget. Whitespark's 2026 Local Services Ads ranking factors put budget and bidding, reviews, service selection and response times at the top.
| Factor | What to do |
|---|---|
| Proximity | You cannot move, but set a realistic service area and hours |
| Reviews | Ask every customer; our best-performing clients get 25 new reviews a month |
| Responsiveness | Answer calls live; reply to messages within minutes |
| Profile quality | Photos, bio, every relevant job type, accurate hours |
| Budget and bid | Enough weekly budget not to run out; a bid that is competitive in your market |
| Service selection | Turn on the job types you want, off the ones you don't |
| Lead ratings | Mark leads and reply to review requests through the app |
Reviews are shared with your Google Business Profile, so the same review routine helps both. See the Google Business Profile reviews guide.
Three findings help set priorities. Google recommends the Maximize leads bidding mode and suggests a budget that can support at least 10 leads a week so the system has enough data, according to AdGenius's summary of Google's guidance. Google also says message leads typically cost less than phone leads, which makes them worth turning on if someone replies within minutes. And in AdGenius's study of 97 contractor accounts, those with 300 or more Google reviews received about 11 times as many LSA leads a year as those with fewer than 100. That is a correlation, not proof, but it matches what we see: reviews buy volume.
Which job types should plumbers turn on?
The ones you do profitably. Google lists plumbing job types such as drain cleaning, water heater work, leak repair, pipe and sewer work, fixture repair and installation, and others; the exact list depends on your area. Start with your most valuable and most bookable services and leave off work you subcontract or avoid.
| Job type | Typical decision |
|---|---|
| Water heater repair and installation | On; high value |
| Leak detection and repair | On |
| Drain cleaning | On, but watch booking rates (drain/sewer booked at 39.5% in the AdGenius benchmark) |
| Sewer line work | On if you have the equipment and crew |
| Fixture repair (toilets, faucets) | On if you want volume; lower ticket |
| Anything you don't do | Off |
How should plumbers set LSA budget and bids?
Google offers two modes: maximize leads (Google sets bids within your budget) and manual bidding (you set the maximum per lead). Start with maximize leads unless you know your market well, set a weekly budget large enough that you do not run out by Wednesday, and review cost per booked job after a few weeks.
- Set budget from booked-job math: what a job is worth, how many leads you book, and what you can pay per lead.
- Raise budget in freeze season and other busy periods if you can staff it.
- If leads are expensive, check reviews and response times before raising bids.
- Compare cost per booked job against your Google Ads and free channels.
Google sets a weekly average budget; spend can run above it in a given week, but Google's policy caps monthly spend at a maximum calculated from the weekly figure, and the ad stops showing when that is reached. A worked example: if your office can handle 12 more leads a week and your market runs around $70 a lead, that is about $840 a week. Check it against the math in the next sections before committing.
What is changing with Local Services Ads and Performance Max?
Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. According to Google Ads Help, the first phase began in August 2026 for US home services, including plumbing, with more advertisers moving in late 2026 and 2027. The ads stay pay-per-lead and keywordless, and they show in the same places.
| What stays the same | What to do now |
|---|---|
| Pay per lead, not per click | Keep tracking cost per booked job |
| No keywords; job types and area drive matching | Re-check job types and service area after migration |
| Same placements | Nothing to change |
| LSA reports do not migrate | Download your lead history and reports before you move |
Watch your first weeks after migration closely: compare lead volume, lead quality and cost per lead with the same weeks before, and check that your settings carried over correctly.
Anderson Plumbing Heat & Air pairs strong Google Business Profiles with paid search, and its profile interactions rose 210.9% year over year. Because LSA and the profile share reviews, the same review routine that grows the profile also strengthens the ads.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for plumbers?
For most plumbing companies, yes, if the phones are answered. The math is simple to run with your own numbers. Using the benchmark median of $71 per lead and its finding that about one lead in five becomes a paying customer, a paying plumbing customer costs about $319. Your result depends on how many leads your office books.
| Share of leads that become paid jobs | Cost per lead | Cost per paid job |
|---|---|---|
| 20% (about 1 in 5, the AdGenius finding) | $71 | $355 |
| 35% | $71 | $203 |
| 50% | $71 | $142 |
The table is arithmetic on the median, not a promise. What it shows is that the office matters as much as the ad: raising the share of leads that become paid jobs from 20% to 50% cuts the cost of each job by more than half without touching the budget. Compare the result with your average ticket for the job types you run. A $319 customer is a bargain on a water heater replacement and expensive on a single drain call unless that customer comes back.
Where do plumbing LSA leads get lost?
Mostly after the phone rings. The ad decides how many people contact you; your office decides how many become jobs. Track the funnel in four steps so you know which one to fix.
| Step | Question | Benchmark or rule of thumb | Fix if low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer rate | Did a person pick up? | Aim for nearly every call during your listed hours; missed calls can be charged | Overflow answering service that books; accurate hours |
| Bookable rate | Was it a real customer with a job you do? | In an August 2026 review of about 100 contractors, AdGenius found 43% of LSA conversions could not have been booked | Tighter job types and areas; rate leads |
| Booking rate | Did the office book a visit? | SearchLight: 44.5% of plumbing LSA leads booked (Feb 2026); ServiceTitan: top performers book 62% of inbound calls vs. 39% for everyone else | Script, next-available window, fast callbacks |
| Close rate and ticket | Did the visit become paid work, and for how much? | SearchLight: $1,714 average plumbing ticket | Options on site, follow-up on open estimates |
Run your own numbers through it monthly. A plumbing company paying $70 a lead that books half its calls pays about $140 per booked visit; the same company booking a third pays about $210, with no change to the ads. That is why we start every LSA review by listening to calls.

Book a Growth CallHow should plumbers set up the Local Services profile itself?
Treat it like a second storefront. It is what the customer sees after tapping the ad, and Google uses its quality when ranking.
| Profile field | Best practice for plumbers |
|---|---|
| Business name | Same as your Google Business Profile, signage and license |
| Bio | Plain-language summary: years in business, licensed plumbers, main services, towns, how fast you respond |
| Photos | Real trucks, techs and finished work; no stock images |
| Hours | Only hours someone answers; they decide when missed calls are charged |
| Service area | Towns or ZIP codes you reach profitably |
| Job types | Only work you want |
| Reviews | Linked from your Google Business Profile |
| Business highlights | Add true ones, such as family-owned, years in business, financing |
How should plumbers handle Local Services Ads calls and messages?
Fast and the same way every time. Responsiveness is a ranking factor, and a customer who reaches voicemail will tap the next ad. The calls come through a Google tracking number, so make sure it rings to people who can book.
- Answer within a few rings, with your company name.
- Get name, address, the problem and how urgent it is.
- Offer the next available window, not an open question.
- Confirm by text with the tech's name and arrival window.
- For messages, reply within minutes; turn on app notifications for the office.
- After the job, mark the lead as booked in the app and send your review link.
If you cannot staff phones at night, either set your hours to match or use an answering service that books jobs. Remember that a call answered by voicemail counts as a connected lead.
How do plumbers handle bad LSA leads?
Mark every lead and flag the ones that are not real customers. Google says it automatically credits some low-quality leads, and the lead ratings you give help the system learn what you want. Typical leads to flag for plumbers:
- Calls for services you do not offer or have turned off.
- Callers outside your service area.
- Spam, sales calls and solicitations.
- Job seekers.
- Wrong numbers or customers looking for another company.
Do not flag leads just because they did not book; a real customer who chose someone else is a valid lead. Keep notes so you can spot patterns, such as one job type that brings many unusable calls and should be turned off.
Should plumbers turn on message and booking leads?
Yes, if someone will answer them within minutes. Messages and booking requests reach the homeowner who finds the problem at 11 p.m. and does not want to call, and Google says message leads typically cost less than phone leads. They also count toward responsiveness, so a slow reply can hurt ranking as well as the job.
| Lead type | Best for | What to set up |
|---|---|---|
| Phone call | Emergencies and most repair work | Live answering during listed hours; overflow service that books |
| Message | After-hours and non-urgent requests, photos of the problem | App notifications on for the office; a reply template that offers times |
| Booking request | Planned work such as water heater replacement | Accurate availability; confirm by phone or text quickly |
Write two or three reply templates the office can personalize: one for emergencies ("We can have a licensed plumber there between 2 and 4 today; can I confirm your address?"), one for planned work, and one for jobs you do not do, pointing them elsewhere politely. Mark message leads in the app just like calls.
How do Local Services Ads work for multi-location or plumbing and HVAC companies?
Each location needs accurate service areas and hours, and its own linked Google Business Profile, so reviews and proximity match the place the work is done. If you also do heating and cooling, HVAC is a separate category with its own job types and screening; run it alongside plumbing and track the two separately, because lead costs differ (the benchmark HVAC median was $59 vs. $71 for plumbing). See Local Services Ads for HVAC for the HVAC side. Underwood Plumbing shows the profile side of multi-location work: three Google Business Profiles, one per real location in McKinney, Bonham and Sherman, TX, produced 897 calls from April to August 2026, and those same profiles carry the reviews any linked ads display.
Should plumbers run Local Services Ads and Google Ads together?
Most established plumbing companies should, once LSA is producing booked jobs. The two reach different people: LSA sits at the very top for broad "plumber near me" style searches, while search ads let you target specific high-value jobs, symptoms and towns with your own landing pages. SearchLight's data shows why LSA usually comes first:
| All home services | LSA (Feb 2026) | Google Ads, non-branded (Jan 2026) | Google Ads, blended (Jan 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead | $53 | $149 | $104 |
| Booking rate | 43.9% | 37.6% | 41.7% |
| Cost per paying customer | $233 | $804 | $472 |
| Average ticket | $1,826 | $2,516 | $2,465 |
LSA wins on cost per customer, but search ads brought larger average tickets in the same data, because they can be aimed at replacements and repipes rather than every repair call. Our Google Ads for plumbers guide covers the search side, and the LSA vs. Google Ads comparison goes deeper on splitting budget.
When are Local Services Ads not a good fit for a plumber?
When the office cannot answer, when the work you want is not what LSA sends, or when the math does not work. LSA is built for fast, local service calls; it is weaker for a company that only wants large commercial jobs or new construction. Hold off, or fix the problem first, if:
- Phones go unanswered during listed hours. Missed calls can be charged and hurt responsiveness.
- Your average ticket is small and customers rarely return. A $300 cost per paying customer does not work on $200 jobs.
- You cannot pass screening yet. Licensing, insurance or background check gaps will stall the account.
- You are already at capacity. More leads you cannot run make reviews worse, which hurts every Google channel.
In those cases the better first spend is usually on call handling and your free channels: Google Business Profile and Google Maps rankings.
How should plumbers adjust LSA through the year?
Raise budgets when demand and your capacity both rise, such as hard freezes and the fall and winter water heater season, and trim them when you are booked solid. LSA brings leads only while budget remains, so a budget that runs out midweek in January costs you the most valuable calls of the year. Check spend pacing weekly in busy seasons.
AdGenius's year-over-year comparisons suggest off-season leads can be the cheapest of the year: their all-trade average was $47.58 in October 2025 and $55.27 in January 2026, against $62.56 in June 2026. Shoulder months are a good time to launch a new profile, build reviews and gather booking data before peak season.
What are the most common Local Services Ads mistakes plumbers make?
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Profile hours say open; no one answers | Match hours to real answering; use a booking answering service |
| Job types you don't want left on | Turn them off |
| Leads never rated | Review and mark leads weekly |
| Budget runs out early in the week | Set budget for the full week or lower bids |
| Few new reviews | Ask after every job |
| Slow message replies | Notifications on; reply in minutes |
| Website or ads still say "Google Guaranteed" | Say Google Verified; the guarantee ended Dec 7, 2025 |
What weekly LSA routine works for plumbing companies?
| When | Task | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Answer or return every lead; reply to messages within minutes | Responsiveness affects ranking and booking |
| Daily | Mark leads booked or not; rate bad leads | Feeds Google's lead quality system and your own data |
| Weekly | Check spend pacing and lead statuses (charged, in review, credited) | Avoid running out of budget midweek; catch problem job types |
| Weekly | Send review requests for every completed job | Reviews drive volume |
| Monthly | Cost per booked job by job type; turn off losers | Job types are the main targeting lever |
| Monthly | Compare cost per lead with the same month last year | Seasonality hides real changes |
| Before renewals | Upload new insurance and licenses | Expired documents can pause ads |
How do you measure plumbing Local Services Ads?
| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| Cost per booked job | Decides budget |
| Booking rate by job type | Shows which job types to keep |
| Answer rate | Missed calls can still be charged |
| Cost per lead vs. benchmark | $43–$95 range for plumbing; varies by market |
| Credited leads | Lead quality |
| Reviews per month | A main ranking factor |

Google Verified is the badge Local Services Ads now show for businesses that pass Google's screening; it replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified in October 2025. The money-back guarantee ended for services booked after December 7, 2025, so Google Guaranteed is no longer available.
What does a plumber need to get Google Verified?
Google's screening can include background checks, business registration, insurance and license checks, plus a minimum number of reviews.
Do plumbers pay for missed calls on Local Services Ads?

How do plumbers rank higher in Local Services Ads?

Google says screening averages 3 to 4 weeks after documents are submitted. Plumbing has extra background screening for field workers, so send your tech list, insurance certificate and license details together.
Can plumbers dispute bad Local Services Ads leads?
Not with a manual dispute. Google now reviews lead quality automatically, and most credits are applied within 30 days. Leads for job types or areas you left switched on are no longer credited, so keep settings tight and rate leads.
